In part one, we talked about moisturisers, primers, concealers, foundations and eye makeup.

In part two we’re going to talk about bronzers, contour, lip products, blusher, highlighters, powders, setting spray and makeup remover.

Lip Products

If your clients want to draw attention to their lips, you’re going to need various types of lip makeup. They are:

1. Lip Liner

[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_single_image image=”2543″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]Also known as a lip pencil, this product is designed to prevent the lips from ‘bleeding’ or smudging when you apply lipstick, so you always apply it before lipstick.

You can also use it to fill in the entire lip, and sometimes it can be used as a lipstick.

Similar to lipstick, it is made of waxes, oils and pigment. However, lip liner has less oil and more wax and pigment, making them firmer for precise application.

There are several benefits of using lip liner:

• Fill uneven areas on the outer edges of the lips
• Gives the lips a smoother shape
• Outlines the lips
• Prevents lipstick from bleeding
• Creates contrast and makes the lips stand out
• Portable
• Comes in a range of colours, including transparent
• Adds definition
• Makes lipstick last longer

2. Lipstick

[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_single_image image=”2542″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]Lipstick adds colour, texture and protection to the lips and is a staple of anyone’s makeup bag. 

There are many reasons you should have lippy as part of your MUA kit:

• Hydrates the lips
• There are hundreds of colours to choose from (which could be bad for your bank balance)
• Draws attention to the smile
• May have SPF
• Enhances the eyes
• Adds definition to the lips
• Gives clients a psychological boost
• Easy to apply
• Makes the lips look fuller

There are different types of lipstick:

• Moisturising lipsticks — suitable for people who have dry lips, contain ingredients like glycerin, vitamin E and aloe. Can make the lips appear wet and shiny
• Satin and sheer lipsticks — suitable for dry lips, oily consistency and may need applying several times throughout the day. Nourish lips while making them shiny and glossy 
• Matte lipsticks — smooth and younger look with ingredients like vitamin E and aloe. Great if you’re looking for colourful shades that aren’t shiny
• Cream lipsticks — suitable for women with small lips, smooth but not shiny. Contains more wax for a lasting effect, but can cause dry lips
• Pearl and frosted lipstick — makes lips sparkle and glisten, giving a shiny effect. Can be heavy, dry quickly and crack, so use moisturiser as well
• Lip gloss — useful for women with small or thin lips, adds definition and depth
• Long wearing lipstick — suitable for women who don’t have time to make regular applications. May wear off if you eat something oily or greasy

Face Products

There are various types of face makeup that help add colour, smoothen your skin, lessen the appearance of pores, and help you create unique looks, they are:

1. Bronzer

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_single_image image=”2541″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]Not to be mistaken for contour, bronzer is applied to give skin a sun-kissed look.

There are several reasons you should carry bronzer in your MUA kit:

• Gives you a healthy glow
• Makes your skin look tanned
• Makes the skin look warm
• Can provide the illusion of a narrower nose

There are different types of bronzer:

• Shimmer bronzer — powder based, great for adding a natural, subtle colour, doesn’t give a full-tanned look, ideal for fair or light skin
• Matte bronzer — cream and liquid types, ideal for creating defined, chiselled looks, healthy colour, you’ll need a bronzer about two shades darker than your skin. Ideal for medium olive skin
• Sheer bronzer — create a sun-kissed look, less chance of going orange or shimmery, bring out natural warmth, suitable for fair and dark-skinned people

2. Contour

[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_single_image image=”2544″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]Contouring is a makeup technique that gives definition and structure to your face. As makeup techniques have advanced contouring products have become more popular, especially as celebrities like Kim K create new techniques and products.

Contour is a crucial part of your kit for these reasons:

• Defines, enhances and sculpts the face
• Makes the face slimmer
• Accentuates the natural lines of the face
• Creates an emphasized look
• Hide or change unwanted features

Contouring products usually come in two forms:

• Cream — great for everyday use, quick to work with, natural finish, not great for oily or blemished skin
• Powder — defined look with a matte finish, great staying power, looks overdone and unnatural if you apply too much

3. Blush

[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_single_image image=”2545″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Sometimes known as rouge, is a makeup product used to add colour to the face and cheeks.

You should carry blush in your kit for the following reasons:

• Gives the face a flush of colour
• Makes the face look lively, especially if you’ve applied foundation
• Can be used for contouring
• Ideal for those with a pale complexion
• Gives the face a youthful look

Blusher comes in various forms:

• Gel — adds a sheer glow, so use with caution, doesn’t wash away easily, good on oily and dry skin
• Powder — mild natural glow, long-lasting, good for oily skin
• Cream — versatile, adds more shine and glow, moisturises the skin
• Tinted — flawless finish, great on dry skin, glowing and shiny
• Shimmer — adds extra shine and glow, use in small quantities

4. Highlighters

Highlighters entered the mainstream when Mac released their strobing cream, and popularity has been attributed to the rise of YouTube makeup tutorials and social media promotions.

You should carry highlighters in your kit for the following reasons:

• Minimise dark circles
• Help clients look younger
• Plump up lips
• Adds a fresh look to your face
• Make eyebrows bolder

Highlighters come in the following forms:

• Powder — long-lasting, ideal for combination or oily skin types, can stick or look patchy
• Liquid — opaque finish and higher shine, all over glow, smooth even finish, ideal for dry skin, versatile, natural dewy finish
• Cream — soft glow, ideal for dry skin, matte finish, sculpted look, ideal for oily skin

Finishing

Once you’ve applied makeup to a client’s face, you’ll need to finish it so everything stays where it should. Here’s what you need to do it:

1. Setting/Finishing Powders

[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_single_image image=”2547″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Setting and finishing powders are used after foundation has been applied to reduce shine and ensure makeup lasts.

The difference is that setting powders come in loose and compressed forms, whereas finishing powders are either translucent or in your skin tone.

You should carry setting and finishing powders for these reasons:

• Mattifies the skin
• Prevents foundation from sliding
• Reduce the look of lines and pores

There are two types of setting powder:

• Loose — light coverage, messy, not great for transporting, great for oily skin
• Pressed — easy to carry, long-lasting, easily flattened, matte look, covers blemishes and black spots

There are two types of finishing powder:

• Translucent — blends well, kills shine, doesn’t look too thick, bad blending can lead to flashback
• Skin tone — adds extra coverage, conceals scars and blemishes, looks thick as you reapply

2. Setting Spray

[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”2548″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]Last but not least, setting spray is an essential part of any MUA’s kit because this is what holds your hard work in place.

Some MUAs use setting spray before and after applying makeup, but its main purpose is to protect the makeup once it’s been applied.

Urban Decay’s all nighter setting spray is by far the most popular product out there, with beauty gurus and YouTubers singing its praises.

Nonetheless, there’s a variety of affordable and high-end setting sprays available to MUAs:

• Spray — moisturising, enhances makeup’s staying power, cooling sensation
• Mist — lightweight, hydrates

Dual purpose setting sprays provide dermatological benefits, as well as fixing makeup in place. Mario Badescu offers a whole range of facial sprays which contain ingredients such as green tea and aloe, making them kind to the skin.

3. Makeup Remover

When it’s time for the makeup to come off, it’s important to cleanse and protect the skin in preparation for future applications. Makeup has a tendency to clog the pores, which can increase the chance of blemishes and dry skin.

Many products can be used to remove makeup:

• Makeup wipes — portable, clean, can contain harsh chemicals and dry out the skin, doesn’t clean down into the pores, should be paired with a cleanser or toner
• Facial Wash — comes in the form of scrubs and creams, apply with warm water, thoroughly cleans the skin, can be messy for the removal of heavy makeup
• Facial cleansers — apply with cotton wool, cleanses deep into the pores
• Toners — apply with cotton wool, corrects and balances the pH of the skin, removes excess traces of makeup

Once the skin is cleansed and the makeup has been removed, finish off the routine with a high-quality moisturiser that matches the client’s skin type.

Moisturisers come in a variety of forms:

• Cream — highly moisturising, absorbs quickly into the skin, can contain perfumes that are bad for the skin
• Oil — can contain a mixture of essential oils, some are too harsh for sensitive skin, takes longer to absorb into the skin
• Gel — lightweight consistency, soothing after facial scrub, refreshing
