Retraining in Beauty Therapy: What You Need to Know

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Excuses. We’ve all got them; the trouble is, they limit us. If you’ve dreamt of reigniting your passion for the beauty industry but you haven’t, what’s yours?

Here are a few excuses you may have used:

  • I’m overweight or not pretty enough — it’s sad but true, many people feel intimidated going into an industry that is so focused on appearance and health if they aren’t fit and healthy.
  • I don’t have the right skills — duh! Of course you don’t, that’s why the key is in the name: ‘retraining’. Nobody ever went to a retraining course and passed after the first class.
  • Everyone is too young — we get it, as you get older you have a select group of friends, you lose touch with what’s trending, and you feel like you won’t be able to connect with people. What a load of rubbish. If you’re interested in people, you can connect with anyone.
  • I’ll be losing money — can you afford to lose money? Think about it this way, if you didn’t do it, would you regret it?
  • I might not like it — what if you do like it? Picture the scene. You’re lying on your deathbed (depressing, but relevant). Your family say: “what was your one regret in life?” You: “not pursuing my passion for beauty”. Drama!
  • I won’t be able to support my family — family is a unit that should support one another. If you have a dream, ask your partner, kids parents or boyfriend for their backing. They’ll understand.

If you are struggling with any of the above, think about what you could do to improve your outlook. For example, if you think everyone is too young, ask if there are any older people on the course.

Now that’s all of the excuses out of the way, let’s focus on the good stuff…

Remember this statement: It’s never too late to retrain!

Now, let’s get down to it, what do you need to consider when retraining in beauty therapy?

What is Retraining?

Retraining is where you revisit, refresh and redevelop your knowledge of a subject you studied earlier in your life or education.

For example, you studied a Level 2 NVQ in Beauty Therapy when you were 17, got an office job, got a few promotions, but you always knew beauty was your passion and 10 years down the line you want to revisit your qualification.

Retraining is usually done to facilitate a career change — and students need to be updated on best practices, new technologies and policies before they begin working.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_single_image image=”2196″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]

Can Anyone Retrain?

Yes! It doesn’t matter what age, gender or nationality you are, everyone can retrain. Retraining is more common among people who’ve had long careers or people who have been made redundant or stayed at home with children.

What Are the Benefits of Retraining?

  1. Refine your skills — retraining allows you to refine the skills you learned when you studied the subject before
  2. Develop a career plan — if you feel lost in your current job or situation, retraining gives you focus, and allows you to set career goals
  3. Job satisfaction — if you’re looking to switch careers to find a job that makes you happier, picking something you love makes it enjoyable.
  4. Meet likeminded people — if you retrain in something you’re passionate about, there’ll be other people who are passionate about it too. You can share ideas and make new friends.
  5. Challenge yourself — life can become a little dull and boring when you’ve been doing the same thing over and over. Test yourself by doing something that puts you outside your comfort zone.
  6. Make your family proud — everyone adores seeing the people they love do well. If you pursue your dream, your family will be proud of you and support you all the way!
  7. Get better hours — jobs in beauty are known to be flexible; if you’re stuck in the 9-5 grind and want to try working flexibly, retraining in beauty therapy is an option.

Are There Any Downsides to Retraining?

  1. Financial concerns — you may have to continue to work your day job while you retrain, but you can do night courses so your finances shouldn’t suffer.
  2. Child/pet care — if you’ve got children or pets you might have to be around at certain times to ensure they’re fed, bathed and walked. Most classes are only 1-2 nights per week, so get on the phone to grandparents/babysitter/husband and tell them you’re going to beauty school!

How Can I Retrain?

Don’t quit your day job, unless it’s an option. There are four ways you can retrain; you need to consider which one is better for you.

  • Distance learning — if you prefer to learn independently or don’t have the time or funds to commit to a course, you can learn at your own pace with distance learning.
  • Part-time study (while working) — if you need to work while you retrain, you can take a part-time course, which could be one day or one evening a week.
  • Full-time study — if you’ve got the option, you can study in block periods to get your qualification quickly.
  • Apprenticeships — if you’re young enough and don’t want to build up any debts from loans, you can take an apprenticeship and earn while you learn.

What Are of Beauty Should I Retrain In?

Although we’re referring to beauty therapy in this article, there are other areas of beauty you could retrain in, such as:

  • Massage therapy
  • Nail technology
  • Hairdressing
  • Makeup Artistry
  • Threading and waxing

Think about whether you want to specialise or generalise; there are positives and negatives of both.

Where Can Retraining Lead?

You don’t have to be a beauty therapist because you’ve done the training. Many people use the qualification as a leg up into being a salon owner.

If you’ve got savings or you’re willing to take out a loan, it’s definitely an option in the future. If you don’t have ambitions to own a salon, you could set your sights on salon manager.

Do You Have to Pay to Retrain in Beauty?

Probably! However, it depends on how you do it.

If you already work for a company, they may offer to pay for it. For example, if you’re a receptionist at a spa, they may see it as a good career move for you and help you with the expenses.

If you take your training independently, you’ll have to take an Advanced Learner Loan or a Career Development Loan, unless you have the money to pay for the course yourself.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Retrain?

  • What area of beauty do I want to specialise in?
  • Why do I want to do it?
  • What skills do I need to develop?
  • Will these skills be in-demand long-term?
  • What type of retraining suits me?

Create a Plan

If you know to retrain in beauty is the path you want to take, start to create a plan. Jot down all your ideas of what you want to do, how long you want it to take, and what you want to achieve from doing it.

Once you’ve got all this information, set yourself some small goals. You could speak to a local beauty school or try some treatments out on some of your friends and family.
