Lipstick Tips for Beginners

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Let’s face it; everyone’s gone crazy for the Kylie Jenner lip. But before you run to your nearest botox clinic, read our top lipstick tips for achieving the perfect pout.

From liquid lipstick to glossy lips, we’ve got you covered.

Prep

Before you begin practicing any lipstick tips, you need to think about prep. This is an important step to ensure the lips are smooth for an even application. [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3098″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Exfoliate – If the lips are dry and cracked, it’ll look obvious once the lipstick is applied. Use a lip scrub of your choice to remove any dead skin from the lips. You can make your own lip scrub by combining sugar with honey and olive oil. Wet the lips and gently scrub them until they’re smooth, then wipe away the exfoliant with a warm, damp flannel.

Lip Balm – a moisturising lip balm will soothe the lips after exfoliation and give the lip products a base to stick to.

TOP TIP: Use a lip balm which contains SPF to protect the lips from sun damage and prevent dryness.

Cover the lips with excess foundation from the face makeup to create a blank canvas. Blanking out the lips will allow the true colour of the lip product to come through, and it’ll be easier to over/underline the natural lips.

If you’re an MUA, all lip products should be applied with a sanitised lip brush to avoid cross-contamination. Lip brushes also enhance precision as you can draw smaller lines and control the amount you’re using.

Picking a Lip Colour

[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3101″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]From deep red wine shades to barbie pinks, picking the right lip shade for your makeup look, undertones and outfit is the first thing you need to think about.

Pick a lip colour based on your skin tone. Cool undertones are more suited to nudes and corals, while orange shades and deep purples are most flattering on warm undertones.

You also need to think about the size of your lips and whether you want to make them appear smaller or bigger. Darker colours make the lips look smaller and more defined, whereas lighter shades give the illusion of a fuller lip.

When considering a lip shade, it’s important to choose one that suits your whole makeup look. For example, if you’ve applied a dark smokey eye it’s better to stick with nude shades and if you’ve gone lighter on the eyes then you can experiment with the lips more.

Types of Lip Product

No matter what type of lip product you opt for, applying lipstick should always be the last step of your makeup routine. Different lip products achieve different effects, so choose one depending on the type of look you want to create.

Liquid Lipstick

[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3102″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Liquid lipsticks have gained popularity in recent years, thanks to their ability to make the lips look bigger. The matte texture of liquid lipsticks makes it easy to overline the lips and create new lip shapes.

Liquid lipsticks are highly pigmented and dry quickly, so you should only apply one layer to avoid making the lips feel heavy. Leave the lips to dry naturally and avoid patting them with anything because this will dry the lips out too much.

The staying power and pigment of liquid lipsticks makes them a popular choice for evening looks. However, they are also suitable for everyday wear.

Metallic liquid lipsticks and bright colours are often used for festivals and events, so you can really experiment with different looks.

Lip Liner

[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3103″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]In the 90’s it may have been acceptable to line your lips with a shade ten times darker than your main lip colour, but these days you should only go one shade darker.

As far as lipstick tips go, getting the lip liner right is crucial for a well-rounded look. For the perfect application, sharpen the pencil so you can create precise lines. Warm the product up with your fingers if you want to make it duller as this can prevent harsh lines.

When applying the liner, don’t press on too hard as you want the application to look natural and easy to blend. Use small strokes rather than long lines, to create a more natural finish and prevent mistakes.

Define the cupid’s bow with an ‘x’ shape then extend the lines down to the corners of the mouth. To line the bottom lip, start in the middle and work your way outwards. You can slightly overline during these steps if you want a bigger pout.

TOP TIP: A white or clear lip liner is useful for mapping out the lip shape and preventing the look from feathering.

Cream Lipstick

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Cream lipsticks have a buttery formula which makes them more comfortable to wear than liquid lipsticks and glosses. They can be sheer or matte and come in a wide range of colours.

People opt for cream lipsticks because they’re moisturising and easy to apply, making them perfect for on the go.

Apply cream lipstick after lip liner, so the lipstick has a guideline to stay in and prevent smudging.

Apply a lighter lipstick shade in the middle of the lips to create the illusion of a fuller lip.

Lip Gloss

[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3106″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Lip gloss is notorious for being sticky and uncomfortable to wear. You don’t want the gloss to look thick, so apply it conservatively to create the most flattering pout.

The best way to apply gloss is by dabbing it in the centre of the lip and then pressing them together to create a thin layer.

Layer clear or shimmer glosses over lipstick to give them extra shine for evening looks.

Coloured glosses are perfect for creating a pigmented lip with high shine.

Lip Stain

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Lip stains probably aren’t the first thing you think of using when it comes to the lips, but they’re handy if you want your lips to stay all day.

Lip stains have the ultimate staying power because they dry onto the lips and won’t transfer when eating or drinking.

Stains and tints are perfect for finishing off a natural look as they provide a flush of colour that doesn’t look overly preened.

The thin liquids are painted onto the lips and then dry out. There are also peel-off versions which create a more intense tint. [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Extra tips

One of the main problems people have when it comes to lip makeup is making it last. Here are a few additional lipstick tips to help you avoid breaking out the lippy every 5 minutes:

-First of all, apply lipstick as usual then blot it gently with a tissue. Once blotted, dust a fine layer of powder over the top. When this has set, apply the lipstick again. The lips should now stay in place for much longer. [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3108″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]-Feathering occurs when lipstick bleeds over the lipline. This is a common problem, especially when wearing darker colours as smudging becomes more noticeable.

-Line the lips with concealer once the makeup is applied to prevent feathering. Clear lip liners are also perfect for the prevention of feathering as they don’t add colour to the lips and act as a barrier.

Mature lips are more susceptible to feathering as the product can settle into fine lines and wrinkles. To reduce the look of feathering on mature skin, apply as little product as possible.
